It seems that the result could take on the significance that Basildon did when its result was seen as the sign that the Tories would cling on to power in 1992.

The BBC have described the result as "startling".

Reaction online included:

@paulwaugh: Cam's night-shift visit to the firestation in Carlisle looks like it won him the seat. Another Con gain

@JDTwitch: Carlisle! What are u all about?

@r_farnsworth My world has turned on its axis. I can't cope with the idea of Carlisle wearing its Cammo-goggles.

@pbrack ....and on the Carlisle bombshell im off to Nightmare Land!!

@digitalmaverick: Carlisle - Labour seat for many years - beyond the 116 magic number -Gained by Cons - thats a bombshell win #ge2010

Maybe if the past 13 years weren't such a mire of sleaze, corruption and incompetance Labour might have held the city?
Larry, look at the before and after picture of the economy, global problems aside Labour have been a disaster area at managing the economy yet that was supposed to be their greatest 'strength'. I'm glad the majority of people didn't buy into that brand of bs.
