Daz strike earns Barrow AFC win at Penrith

BARROW AFC continued their pre-season campaign with a lively run-out at Northern League side Penrith last night.

The visitors dominated the encounter and created numerous chances, but it took a 25-yard free kick from joint-boss Darren Sheridan to earn a 1-0 victory.

Marc Goodfellow, twice, and Simon Spender both had early efforts for Barrow, while former Bluebird, Graham Anthony, drew a finger-tip save from AFC keeper Shaun Pearson.

Danny Forrest saw a header from a Paul Rutherford run and cross cleared off the line, while a Jason Walker flick-on almost brought the ex-Crawley man a goal just before the interval.

Barrow rang the changes at half-time with Gregg Blundell and Nick Chadwick replacing Walker and Forrest up front. Simon Wiles replaced Rutherford on the wing and made an impression as his side took total control.

Mike Pearson and Kevin Austin swapped their first half full-back and centre back roles and soon Goodfellow had a shot deflected wide from a dangerous Wiles cross.

James Owen’s strong run forward set up Chadwick, but he shot straight at James Holland.

A 74th minute free kick saw Sheridan catch out Holland to float a set piece under the bar in the centre of the goal to give AFC a deserved victory. Barrow visit Windscale United, now managed by ex-AFC man Matt Henney, on Saturday.

AFC: S Pearson (McDonald 81); Spender (Jackson 68); Austin (Spender 80); M Pearson; Bolland; Donnelly (Owen 58); Goodfellow (Rutherford 74); Boyd (Sheridan 68); Walker (Chadwick 46); Forrest (Blundell 46); Rutherford (Wiles 46).
