Millom gala

THE fun had to be moved indoors at the inaugural Millom Gala as the wet weather failed to stop the charity event going ahead.

Proceedings were moved inside Millom Palladium when the rain set in on Saturday morning.

It was an eventuality that organisers, Millom Rotary Club, had prepared for well in advance.

Unfortunately, the children’s roundabout and swings had to be cancelled, as did the pony rides and ice cream and burger vendors.

But entertainment, games, refreshments, face painting and music from Holborn Hill Royal Brass Band inside the venue ensured the day was a success.

The gala was held as the South Copeland Scarecrow Festival took place.

Rotary club president Sue Day said: “It has taken the fete atmosphere away from it, but the people who have come have enjoyed it. The clown show particularly was very popular – there must have been 30 kids all sat there mesmerised.

“Everybody else is suffering with heat exhaustion and we’ve got rain, and we’re the ones with a hosepipe ban!

“We’d like to thank everybody who has come and supported it – both the people who’ve come and the ones who had stalls.

“I think we would like to do it every year.”

Charities and good causes held stalls at the event, organised by Millom Rotary Club to raise money and awareness.

Stalls included West Cumbria Hospice, Haverigg Inshore Rescue, Fairtrade and Millom First Responders.

Bertie the Clown, of Jester for Jesus Ministries, entertained children with his catalogue of tricks.

He said: “I enjoyed it and the kids enjoyed it. It’s always best with audience participation.

“That’s why I inducted them into the Millom magic circle – a hula hoop on the floor that meant they could help me with the magic.”

Millom Rotary Club has a coffee morning planned for October 16 in Millom Guide Hall.
