WOMEN from across Furness took part in the Barrow Race for Life yesterday, raising money for Cancer Research UK.
Dressed in pink, with bunny ears and cowboy hats, more than 1,000 runners, joggers and walkers took to the 5km (3.1 miles) course from Furness Academy’s South Site around Barrow Park.
After an aerobic warm-up, the women set off at 11am with the fastest runner, Olivia Miller, first home in 17 minutes 37 seconds.
Claire Wase, event manager for Barrow’s Race for Life, said: “There’s a big crowd of people taking part and quite a few spectators around as well.
“It’s all ages, all abilities. It’s about being here, experiencing the amazing moments and raising sponsorship for a very good cause.
“We’re here to celebrate and have a good day, to remember and have a good atmosphere. We’ve had a few tears but we’re here for a good reason.”
Cancer Research UK are hoping to reach a fund-raising target of £72,000 from the Barrow Race for Life to go towards the £60m target across the country this year.
Claire Wase said: “It really will help a lot of people.
“The rain did not dampen the spirits at all. The ladies are here, for a reason and to enjoy themselves, so they didn’t let the rain get in the way.”
Hayley McWilliam, 26, from Broughton, hopes to raise £100. She said: “I’ve been running in memory of my boyfriend’s uncle Trevor and his wife auntie Mavis who died of cancer a few years ago. I’ve really enjoyed it this year as well, despite the rain, it’s been really good.”
Karen Logan, 31, ran alongside friends Pam and Sharon. She said: “I’ve lost someone in my family to cancer so it’s cheered me on.
“We’re doing it for everybody really, but we’ve all lost someone close to us through cancer.
“We’ve done our bit for Cancer Research UK and we’re going to do it every year.”
Maureen Smith and her daughter Evie, from Ulverston, ran in memory of family. Maureen said: “It was really good, we loved it. We do it every year and it’s brilliant. We did it for my parents who died of cancer and Evie did it with her Brownie group. We were thinking about family and friends.”
