RAIN once again played havoc with the weekend cricket programme.
This time it was mainly the southern area of the North Lancs and Cumbria League that was the worst affected, with two Premier Division and three Division One games not started.
In the Premier Division, Carlisle batted first at home to Haverigg and made a slow start, being 60 for 1 off 30 overs, Craig Armstrong bowling 15 consecutive overs for only 30 runs.
However, the Carlisle professional Saliya Saman accelerated the run rate and finished on 71 not out, and Carlisle were 181 for 4 after their 50 overs.
Haverigg’s weakened batting line-up never really threatened the Carlisle total, and struggled to a draw at 130 for 7. Second team wicketkeeper Drew Postlethwaite top-scored with 45 and Carlisle’s Lee Readitt took 3 for 39.
Keswick were at Vickerstown an,d when rain washed out proceedings, the visitors were 67 for 2, Andy Rigg making 48.
Cockermouth entertained Workington at Fitz Park where, batting first, Workington made 171 all out, of which Matthew Gorley made 66. Cockermouth went to a good win at 174 for 7, Gareth White making 62. This was a surprising result that puts a dent in Workington’s championship hopes.
Whitehaven were at Penrith and would have been happy at tea with 197 on the board, Dave Watson, 76, and pro Ryan Butterworth, with 47, leading the way. Penrith pro Upul Fernando took 4 for 41.
From being 127 for 2, Penrith lost their last eight wickets for 31 runs and were all out for 158. Nick Birtle made 50 and Fernando, 42. Ryan Butterworth completed a good day taking 6 for 45.
The Kirkby v Cleator, and Millom v Furness games were washed out without a bowl being bowled.
In Division One, Ulverston had visitors Lanercost 37 for 1 when play was abandoned due to rain.
At Wigton, the home side had a good afternoon with the bat, going to tea at 221 for 3. Bobby Sherlock, back to form, made 82 not out, and Nick Watt 50.
Egremont were never going to get near a win as they batted out the overs at 111 for 6, Ian Littleton top-scoring with 35 and Wigton’s Mike Holliday taking 4 for 10.
Workington II had a moderate day with the bat, as visitors Appleby Eden bowled them out for 121, Ian Batty top-scoring with 41. No further play was possible after tea due to rain. There was no play possible in three games, those being Cleator II v Hawcoat Park, Dalton v Duddon SC and Lindal Moor v Millom II.
In the Northern Premier League first division, Barrow openers Jonathan Miles and Greg Platten both passed 500 runs for the season before their game at Netherfield was abandoned.
Miles was 45 not out while Platten hit 38 as Barrow made 87 for 2 after 17 overs. Netherfield captain Marc Hadwin captured the two wickets to fall, bowling both Platten and Barrow professional Pasan Wanasinghe.
Miles has now made 535 runs at 48.64 and Platten 528 at 48.00. Miles holds the club record for an amateur with 545 at 32.06 in 2009.
