Sport Relief 2010

FUND-RAISERS ran, danced, swam and even used wheels to collect cash for charity.

People of all ages from across Furness, the South Lakes and Millom did their bit for Sport Relief yesterday.

At Walney School students showed off their moves on dance mats, provided by the Park Leisure Centre in Barrow.

The youngsters also dressed as their favourite sports personalities.

The students each paid £ to get involved in the event.

Leam Da Silva wore a signed Barrow AFC top. The 12-year-old, who was hoping for a Barrow AFC victory today, said: “It’s been very good using the dance mats, its been very energetic.

“It’s a good event for Sport Relief.”

Fancy dress was the order of the day at Furness Academy in Barrow.

Jockeys, Teletubbies, ‘118’ runners and super heroes were among the characters taking part in the one-mile run around the academy’s North Site playing fields.

Students and staff paid £1 each for the charity and ran, jogged or walked around the course.

There were prizes for the best fancy dress and the fastest times for boys and girls in each year group.

Daniel Baxter, 16, dressed up in a yellow chicken suit.

The Year 11 student said: “We have dressed up as a bit of fun for Sport Relief and I’m roast chicken in this suit, it was hot. “It’s been a good laugh, a lot of people have got dressed up for a good cause.”

“I wanted this to be a fun event that was attainable for all.”

A teacher and two pupils hit the water for Sport Relief.

Victoria Junior School teacher Kerry Ward’s target was to complete 100 lengths of the pool at the Park Leisure Centre. Pupils Connor Wood and Georgia Stanway, both 11, were tasked with doing as many lengths as they could.

There were also dancing events and a fancy dress run at the Barrow school.

At George Romney Junior School, Dalton, there was a mass sponsored dance routine and pupils also used scooters.
