Wiles to sign new Barrow AFC deal

WINGER Simon Wiles has agreed a new deal to stay at Barrow AFC.

The 25-year-old will soon put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Holker Street.

Wiles joined the Bluebirds – who go to Lancaster City tonight in a friendly (7.45pm kick-off) in January after returning from a long injury lay-off. He played 25 games last term and scored twice. The wideman also started at Wembley when Barrow won the FA Trophy before his deal ran out.

Preston-based Wiles was invited back this pre-season to prove himself fit and worthy of a contract.

He has done just that, with Barrow joint-manager Dave Bayliss saying last night: “We’ve offered Wilesey a one-year contract and he’s agreed to stay with us, which we’re delighted with.

“We never wanted to lose Wilesey, but he’s had a lot of injury problems, so we wanted him to come back and prove he’s fit. He’s done just that and looks good.”

It is not, however, all good news at Holker Street. Scans have revealed that injured trio Paul Jones (Achilles), Nick Chadwick (knee) and Mike Pearson (thigh) will all be out of action for at least a couple of weeks.

Bayliss said: “Jonah’s Achilles hasn’t really been right since last season, Chaddy jarred his knee in training and Mike did his thigh during Tuesday’s win over Morecambe.

“They should all be back available for the start of the season.”

l Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock will play for The Bay All Stars in tomorrow’s charity match against the Soap Stars at Holker Street (kick-off 1pm).

Among the Soap Stars team will be famous faces from Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale.
