TOUGH TO BEAT: The rugby players of St Aloysius, Barrow in the 1959-60 season

A list of the players’ names appeared recently in the 50 Years Ago snippets on the Memories Page and prompted Paul Cargan, of Margate Street, Barrow, to send in a team picture.

In that special season, when the shortages of the 1950s gave way to the start of the swinging 60s, the team won the Barrow Schools’ League and the Fallowfield Knock-out Competition.

Shown on the back row, from left, are Frank Skyrme, Terry Russell, Brian McKinley, Stewart Mansell, Jim Salmon, Paul Cargan, Frank Craig, Wilf Heywood and David Mcguire.

On the middle row, from left, are Adrian Critchley, Bernard Diamond, Tom Stockbridge, Ian Millar, Kevin Slowey, John Diamond and George Wren.

On the front row, from left, are Tony Goodwin and John Devitt.
